The Deed of Settlement was signed on the 13th of April 2013. The settlement redress was $11.76 million. There are five hapū of Ngāti Rārua in Te Tau Ihu. Ngāti Paretona, Te Arawaere, Ngāti Turangapeke, Ngāti Pareteata and Ngāti Kairārunga.
All members of Ngāti Rārua are beneficiaries of the tribes Treaty Settlement. Our settlement in Te Tauihu is unique to anywhere else in the country because we have eight Iwi spread throughout the top of Te Waipounamu.
The claims process was our opportunity to tell our history. When you have seen all those things about how our people were treated, how we didn’t get access to medical care and if our whenua goes then our wellbeing, history and traditions go to.
